Expert group: Hard to reach groups - migrants
Background ( description of the situation and the field the activity takes place)
Migrants face different barriers in accessing health and social services. In case of drug use, they are confronted with a double stigma. Due to a lack of cultural sensitivity within the services, mistrust among the group of drug users, communication problems (due to the language barrier), a lack of awareness among drug services for the specific needs of migrant drug users and the stigma surrounding drug use within the own community the access services fail to reach migrant drug users in an appropriate way very often.
Experiences from the past years have shown that there is a lack on information, research and service providing towards the specific needs of migrant drug users. Mobile drug users within or from outside the European Union face similar problems as the migrant population (compare reports, articles and website AC Company).
Aims/Goals
To improve the knowledge about the specific needs of particular migrant groups, to identify models of good practice and to contribute to research in this field, in order to bridge the gap between the needs of migrant and mobile drug users and the services of health and social agencies.
Objectives/activities
  • Map and collect data and information on existing best practices in reaching migrant and mobile drugusers.
  • Development of best practises in reaching migrant and mobile drugusers
  • Support and advice towards service providers in approaching and reaching mobile and/or migrant drug users
  • To investigate if models of good practise are applicable for other target groups
Methods
  • Map and collect data and information
  • Develop, disseminate and analyse a questionnaire for service providers, which work for mobile and/or migrant drug users (by using relevant indicators)
  • Evaluation of different methods in working with migrant and mobile drugusers
Results/outputs
  • Manual with models of best practice
  • Guidelines on implementation for service providers working with migrant and mobile drugusers
