Introduction
History
The deviance programme was accredited by the board of directors at
the Institute of Sociology, ELTE University. The primary goal of the
establishemnt of the programme was to extend the interpretation framework
and the definitons on deviance provided by classic sociological theories
and open up additional contexts for interpretation related to culture
history, anthropology, law philosophy, penal system, etc. Following
a period of five years, the programme leaders received a demand from
students of the programme concerning the establishment of an institution
laying more emphasis on research activity. The fact that the Institute
of Sociology and Social Policy became a separate department also played
a great role in the set up of the institute. Making use of the situation,
in 2003, Judit Biro and József Rácz established RIDS.
Present
The Research Institute on Drug Studies is primarily involved in research
related to illegal drug use and drug users in Hungary, however, the
institute has entered new fields recently by participating in a domestic
and international research project aiming at the marginalised youth
particularly. The latter one is currently under way within the Sixth
Framework, co-ordinated by a Dutch non-profit organisation located
in Amsterdam. In order to finance reserach in Hungary, RIDS applies
for funds provided by ministries and governmental institutions.
Future
The success of the projects completed so far has made RIDS members
to rethink its original role by aiming to become an influental player
in both the Hungarian and Central European drug research field. Additonal
future plans include participation in large-scale EU projects. |
