Expert group: Hard to reach groups: youth at risk - Bluepoint
Background ( description of the situation and the field the activity takes place)
“Youth at risk” is a hard to reach group in the area of recreational drug use. As the health risks are present and relevant, party services provide harm reduction services, like building up special chill-out zone on rave-parties, which provide free water, glucose, condoms and information leaflets about drugs, relevant services (drug-therapy, counseling etc.) and help conversations with peers. Often, services are well known and popular in the underground scene (goa, dnb, breakbeat), but hardly known or accepted by the mainstream (techno, trance, clubbing) although the drug consumption is on the same very high (or sometimes even higher) level, than it is in the underground scenes..
Aims/Goals
Bluepoint Party Service carries out harm reduction activities in Hungary and organizes chill out rooms on underground parties in Hungary. The main aim of the project is to create access to harm reduction services within the mainstream rave-party scene. Since this target group is not reached through the basic services (chill-out zone on the party) this access can be provided by internet and leaflets. These methods should lead to the formation of new peer groups, providing the same services, which Bluepoint already carries out within the underground scene. This campaign will influence both: the risk behavior of the target group as well as the attitude of the organizers, which could finally open closed doors for harm reduction activities on their events
Objectives/activities
The expert group will support and discuss the activities of the project and exchange experiences on the issues.
  • Collect the basic parameters and needs of the subculture in order to set up a specific campaign, conform to their needs and the perception of their environment (in close cooperation with the research section).
  • Development of a website with clear and obvious information for users: how to use drugs, how to prevent short and long term effects of drug consumption. For parents we will have a specific section, providing honest and clear information about the party scene and drug use in particular. Website will contain online questionnaires, descriptions and user groups. The website will promote mutual support and will define risk behaviour, in order to create risk awareness among young drug users.
  • Produce a manual with the complete know-how of the Party Service, also provided as pdf-file on the website.
  • All materials will be published for offline promotion of the campaign.
Methods
The main working method for the expert group will be structured e-mail discussions and exchange of working documents. The project will use the following methods:
  • statistic surface and online questionnaires on the website
  • outreach, distributing leaflets
  • training of peers
  • media campaign
  • setting up a panel of players in the field.
Results/outputs
  • Access to harm reduction messages and health services for the mainstream rave-party scene
  • User friendly, objective website and leaflets with information on drugs and drug problems within the party scene
  • Development and description of a model for harm reduction within the rave-party scene.
